Speak the truth

From today’s Scripture: “Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the Evil One.”—Mt 5:37
In the Old Testament, oaths were often accompanied by various rituals and or sacrifices. The accompaniment of these could often distract from the actual words. The individual is more concerned about performing the ritual correctly.
In today’s world we have seen politicians answer a simple question with additional verbiage that is often used to dance around an actual answer. Today, Jesus is again breaking down the rules to their core. He affirms that anything obscuring what we ought to say, or anything meant to mislead “comes from the Evil One.” He shows us that insincerity is how political and economic life become and remain alienated from truth and become destructive toward the kingdom of God. He encourages us to speak from our heart.
Let us pray: Lord, you see it all, and you read my heart. Help me to recommit myself to living in the light, doing away with all falsehood. From now on, my “yes” will be yes, and my “no” will be no. Help me, God, to make this so.
