10th Tuesday in Ordinary Time

Salt of the earth

From today’s Scripture: “Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?’”—Mt 5:13

Let’s set aside the bad press that salt gets from the dieticians! Salt has been prized over the years. During the biblical times, it was used as a seasoning, preservative, a component of ceremonial offering and even an exchange unit. It isn’t the simple table salt of which we are so familiar.

So, when Jesus challenges us to be the salt of the earth, it is huge! Are we up to this challenge? Does our faith measure up to this challenge or have we found ourselves just going through the motions? Has our faith drifted so far, lost its taste, that it should be thrown out?

Let us pray: Dear Lord, help us maintain our faith to serve as the salt of the earth providing the seasoning so needed by the world today.
