10th Wednesday in Ordinary Time

Jesus’ fulfillment

From today’s Scripture: “Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.’”—Mt 5:17

Today’s Gospel seems to present a contradiction. Jesus often shows his frustration with the pharisees and their zealous adherence to their rules. But I think the key phrase in the reading is that Jesus came “not to abolish but to fulfill.” By fulfilling the Law, he reminds us that just observing the external restrictions isn’t sufficient anymore.

In the busy-ness of day-to-day living, it is a challenge to remember this. Often, I fall into a habit of fulfilling the minimum requirements, just going through the motions.

Let us pray: Dear Lord, give us the strength to fulfill the law every day, to go beyond observing to living it.
