11th Friday in Ordinary Time

Clinging to hope

From today’s Scripture: “And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.” —Mt 6:23

The world can seem like a very dark place sometimes—violence, hunger, natural disasters, corruption, and so many other troubling things. There is always the temptation to internalize this darkness and to be overwhelmed by it. In such difficult times, it is easy to lose hope.

In the preceding lines of this Scripture passage, the eye is described as the lamp of the body. If the eye is healthy, the body is filled with light. If not, the body is filled with darkness. The eye points to our perspective on life’s events.

We can become consumed with the evil and darkness in the world, or we can keep our focus on God and the true hope found in the Scriptures. Maintaining that healthy perspective is a daily commitment. But if we are successful, we not only experience hope in our own lives but are able to share it with others. Let us be people of the light!

Let us pray: Dear Lord, thank you for being the source of true hope in the midst of a darkened world. Help us to be beacons of light and hope in our local community.
