11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Help me to understand.

From today’s Scripture: “With many such parables he spoke the word to them as they were able to understand it.” —Mk 4:33

Perhaps you may have had the experience of trying to understand something that you find complicated. Having hit a brick wall, you ask someone to explain it to you. Oftentimes, explanations grounded in our everyday experience are easiest to understand. Jesus understands this, which is why he speaks to his followers in parables, or stories with examples from everyday life. Rather than expecting his disciples (and us today) to understand our faith at his level, Jesus brings it down to a level we can understand. He meets us where we’re at. How blessed we are that he understands our needs and shares the Good News with us.

Let us pray: Jesus, may your use of parables guide our efforts to share the good news of the Gospel with those who seek to understand.
