Mercy in all things

From today’s Scripture: “He makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.”—Mt 5:45
One of the hallmarks of Pope Francis’ papacy is his call for mercy. His papal motto is “having mercy and choosing him,” referring to Jesus’ call to St. Matthew. Back in 2015, Pope Francis even called for a yearlong Jubilee of Mercy, worldwide. He declared a day for the poor each year; he assigned special ministers to give donations directly to people in need. What is he up to?
Francis is nudging each of us to consider the mercy of God. Everything we have comes from God, and God wants all of us to treat each other with dignity. We are to be merciful as God is merciful. Instead of judging who is good and who is bad, we are to focus on how God is working in each one of us.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, help me to see in the poverty of others, my own poverty. Move me beyond judging others to seeking ways to make the world a more loving, merciful place.
