In giving, we receive.

From today’s Scripture: “But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.”—Mt 6:3-4
Let’s face it, almost none of us will be like Chuck Feeney, the billionaire who gave away his entire fortune without much fanfare, living in a simple apartment. “I had one idea that never changed in my mind. That you should use your wealth to help people,” he famously said.
But each of us has much to offer to those around us. “In giving, we receive,” go the lines of the St. Francis Peace Prayer. If we make a point of taking credit for our generosity, it’s really not all that generous; it’s more of a compulsion toward fame. Like God’s mercy, our own mercy toward others is best done quietly.
Let us pray: O God, enkindle in me a generous heart. Let me name the resources that I have, whether physical or my own resources within, and share them freely with those around me.
