12th Thursday in Ordinary Time

Words into action

From today’s Scripture: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’…”—Mt 7:21

Sometimes our words don’t quite match the reality. What sounded like a 300-pound blue fin tuna was actually a pond-caught blue gill. Today’s Gospel cautions us about our commitment being mere words. We can have great intentions; my mother used to say someone was “…going to set the world on fireif they only had a match!” There has to be more than words—and actually, more than actions as well. Doing good things without “knowing and being known” by God falls short. From our relationship with God should come the fruition of words-into-action.

Let us pray: Lord, help me nurture my bond with you so that the words of love I utter to you lead me to express my love to those I meet.
