13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Learning from the poor

From today’s Scripture: As a matter of equality your abundance at the present time should supply their needs, so that their abundance may also supply your needs, that there may be equality.” (2 Cor 8:13-14)

It’s not uncommon for those of us who use cellphones and computers for daily prayer to thank God for our abundance. We are humble before God, after all! But true humility calls for another step: Love one another, Jesus tells us. And love can start with a feeling, but always it is more. Our love for one another means that we help one another, physically as well as spiritually. We all know of some way to help those less fortunate than us.

The other side of the coin, as today’s Scripture tells us, is that the poor will supply our needs through their abundance. That abundance may not be the kind we can measure. But it’s a two-way street.

Let us pray: Lord, wake me up to the full personhood of the poor whom I encounter today. Help me to be open to the poor and what they might teach me today.
