13th Tuesday in Ordinary Time

God amid the storm

From today’s Scripture: “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?”—Mt 8:26

The Sea of Galilee is not much of a sea–from a hill above the banks you can see from one end to the other. Desert wind storms can race across the land into the sea, causing big waves and big trouble. Surely that’s what Jesus and his disciples are experiencing in today’s reading.

But that’s not really what this story is about, now, is it? It’s about fear and about faith. Notice that Jesus is in the boat all the while, sleeping. There, even with Jesus at their side, the disciples fear for their very lives. Isn’t Jesus always at our side? Do we sometimes feel as if Jesus is asleep, that we’re on our own?

Fear not, Jesus says to his disciples and to us. The Lord, more powerful than any storm that roars across the desert and into our lives, is close at hand to us, always. Jesus has the power to calm any storm. But we have to get over our paralyzing fear. We have to trust.

Let us pray: Lord, you tell us to have faith, but we are weak. So you give us faith. Help me today to open my heart to your gift of faith and to let go of fear, even if the storm is strong. Calm the waters in my soul.
