17th Saturday in Ordinary Time

Darkness and light

From today’s Scripture: “Now Herod had arrested John.”—Mt 14:3

I have always felt this account of John’s martyrdom had to be true. The story is so gruesome that surely someone would have sanitized it before it was included in the Gospel.

What’s also true is that the forces of evil continue to be very strong. Herodias could’ve humbly acknowledged the sin but opted for decapitation rather than repentance. The spirit of evil operates the same today, preferring darkness to light.

Let us pray: O God, grant me the humility and ability to accept my need for repentance.
