17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Trust Jesus

From today’s Scripture: “When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, ‘This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.’” —Jn 6:14

With five he fed 5,000! The feeding of the 5,000 is among the best known miracles of Jesus, but imagine being one of the apostles on that day. To them this was a crisis-management situation. The crowd grew too big, and they were too isolated to find food. Philip notes that even 200 days’ wages wouldn’t buy enough food.

But once again, Jesus was in control all along. Andrew, who asked what good five loaves and two fish would do, was no doubt stressed over the situation. He had only needed to turn to Jesus. In times of crisis, don’t forget that faith in Jesus is the strongest asset we have.

Let us pray: Jesus, you fed 5,000 with next to nothing. Help me to remember that nothing is impossible when I turn to you in faith.
