19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Be not afraid.

From today’s Scripture: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”—Jn 6:51

What frightens you the most? Wild animals? Falling from a tall building? Getting cancer? Beneath it all is the fear of dying. Death is the ultimate threat that every human faces.

In the Preface for the Funeral Mass we pray, “those saddened by the certainty of death might be consoled by the promise of immortality to come. Indeed for your faithful people, Lord, life is changed, not ended…”

Life is changed by the one who nourished us with his body as we struggle through this life.

Let us pray: Lord, form in me a heart that is grateful for all of the ways in which you help me carry the burdens of this life.
