Keep it simple.

From today’s Scripture: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind….You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”—Mt 22:37,39
Experts in any field can sometimes lose track of the big picture. People with theological training are no exception. They’ve been at it for thousands of years! There were arguments in one era about how many angels could fit on the head of pin, arguments in another about who is holier than whom—that kind of thing. The pharisees in the Gospel stories want to know which of the commandments is the greatest, a topic where you could split hairs for weeks.
Jesus cuts through the fluff. Love God, with everything you’ve got. Love your neighbor as much as you love yourself. Everything else will follow.
Let us pray: Dear Lord, keep me out of the weeds today! Help me to keep your big, simple picture in mind, to love you and the people around me in the simplest of ways.
