20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Filled with the Spirit

From today’s Scripture: “…but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.”—Eph 5:19-20

I had the honor of attending the 10th National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis this summer. Every night of the Congress, tens of thousands of people gathered in a football stadium to worship Jesus in eucharistic adoration. I was moved to tears almost every night, overwhelmed by the vast number of us singing together our love for him.

In those moments like at the Congress, it is easy to sing with our whole hearts to the Lord. It is much harder to continue singing when I’m by myself in the midst of a messy living room. But the same Lord, the same Spirit, who filled the football stadium at the Congress comes to us wherever we are today. May we allow him to fill our hearts with his love.

Let us pray: Thank you, Lord, for the gift of this day. Remind me of your love, and help me to share that love with everyone I encounter today.
