What is fair?

From today’s Scripture: “You, too, go into my vineyard, and I will give you what is just.”—Mt 20:4
A mother gives a little something extra to her child who seems to need it. In comes a sibling’s complaint: “That’s not fair!” How many times have we heard that one? How many times have I said that myself! I tend to decide what’s fair and what’s not in my life. Maybe I depend upon a shared understanding among the people closest to me. But that’s never the final word, is it? A parent’s measure, indeed God’s measure, goes beyond our limited understanding. What doesn’t seem fair to me might just be fine with God.
Let us pray: Help me, Lord, to get beyond personal privilege. Help me to conform myself to your sense of justice, that surely is broader than my own.
