Daily Reflection

21st Friday in Ordinary Time

Crying is allowed.

From today’s Scripture: “For God did not call us to impurity but to holiness”—1 Thes 4:7

That Scripture verse could have easily been spoken by St. Augustine, the fourth-century man whose life made a remarkable turn from impurity to holiness. In his spiritual autobiography, Confessions, he frequently attributed that conversion to God answering the tears of his mother, St. Monica.

St. Monica shows us that God truly hears the cries of the poor. Her perseverance teaches us that God answers our prayers in His terms and time, not ours. Most important, she gives us hope that no one is beyond God’s reach.

While “there’s no crying in baseball,” we can be rest assured that crying is perfectly permissible in Christian life and spirituality. St. Monica, cry for us!

Let us pray: Lord, give me the grace to persevere in my prayers for my loved ones. Help me be an example of compassion and understanding so that I lead them closer to you.
