Call to discipleship

From today’s Scripture: “’Lord, will only a few people be saved?’”—Lk 13:23

We are all familiar with the saying, “She (or he) has a green thumb.” We know they don’t, literally, but rather they know the how, when and care a plant needs to thrive. Yet even then something unexpected can affect its growth, flowering, and seasonal appearance.

Although Jesus does not answer the question, “Lord will only a few be saved,” he does seem to imply that many will be saved. One need only accept his/her call to discipleship with Jesus. To have a casual relationship is not to be a disciple. Rather, to be saved one must respond to Jesus’ invitation with YES. Since this is a matter of one’s heart, those of us tempted to judge who is saved and who is not may be wrong: “Some are last who will be first, and some are first h will be last”

We need to tend to the plants in our garden. We need to offer help to others whose garden is not thriving.

Let us pray: Lord, help me to answer more fully yes to your call of discipleship. Help me to live it more fully and grow in greater love with you, and all those I meet along the way. Amen.
