Daily Reflection

21st Thursday in Ordinary Time

Watch and pray.

From today’s Scripture: “‘Keep awake, therefore, for you do not know on what day the Lord is coming.’”—Mt 24:42

While serving on mission, I always knew if I was in an area and it was near supper time, that I could always drop in on a family and have dinner with them. It seemed they were always prepared to have an extra person at the dinner table. There is a saying, “expect the unexpected,” and they certainly did.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us to “Keep awake…,” to pay attention.  It’s a message for each of us to consider: Am I preoccupied with many things in life and my own concerns? Do I forget to watch and pray?

The idea that God might come at any hour makes some people nervous, even afraid. Yet, if I let Jesus lead me into a deep love of God, I know that I have nothing to be afraid or to fear. I am able to say, “Here I am Lord.”

Let us pray: Lord may you fill me with the grace of your love that I might keep awake and alert to your coming each day in my life.
