21st Tuesday in Ordinary Time

Daily Reflection

21st Tuesday in Ordinary Time

God is watching us.

From today’s Scripture: “Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know the whole of it. Behind me and before, you hem me in and rest your hand upon me.” Ps 139:4-5

The kid with the cookie crumbs on his lips never can figure out how Mom knows that he’s been snatching snacks off-hours. He’s also heard that his Dad has eyes in the back of his head—he can’t see them but he knows they must be there! Otherwise he wouldn’t always get caught.

Later in life, the man will appreciate that his parents looked out for him, protected him, steered him away from harm. And he is better for it.

That parental love is the image of God in today’s Psalm. You know Lord, what I will say, before I say it. You “hem me in and rest your hand upon me,” sings the psalmist. How beautiful our God is! How carefully we are protected—even when we don’t appreciate it until long after the fact.

Let us pray: O, God, protect me today from all that might harm me. You know what is on the tip of my tongue; help me to tame it so I might sing your praise. Rest your hand upon me.
