Daily Reflection

22nd Friday in Ordinary Time

We are not what we do.

From today’s Scripture: “Thus should one regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.”—1 Cor 4:1

This week we have been reflecting on how little we do and how much God does! It’s the opposite of human nature, it seems. We like to do things on our own, and we like to take credit for what we’ve done.

St. Paul reminds us that we are merely stewards, that is caretakers, for something far greater than anything we might make or do. That which we take care of, which we bring into this world with our own hands and feet, is the mystery of God.

How does that happen? It starts by serving Christ. When we stand at Jesus’ side, watching and listening to the Master, depending upon his grace to empower us, we are ready to be stewards, witnesses, nurturers, of God’s presence. As Teresa of Avila tells us, ours are the hands and feet of Jesus.

Let us pray: Lord, you are the Master, I am your steward. Help me to serve your will. Give me the wisdom to see your hand in everything that happens to me today.
