Unlawful?
From today’s Scripture: “‘Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?….The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.’”—Lk 6:2,5
Jesus was always in conflict with the pharisees. They were the guardians of the Law and quick to point out anything unlawful. The Law that Jesus observed and taught is the law of love. God is love. God’s law must be coming from the heart and building up the kingdom of God. When we forget that, we can fall into the way of the pharisees.
The great commandment, the law that Jesus points to, is to love the Lord, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. When there is a conflict between love and law, love must always be the first choice. What is the choice that best shows love?
Let us pray: God of Love, teach us to seek the loving and caring thing to do. Enable us to be lovers and not mere observers of the law.
