Finding fish the Jesus way

From today’s Scripture: “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.”—Lk 5:4
The saying is, “If at first you don’t succeed, then try again.” But what if you’ve tried again and have nothing? Or tried again and again? Think of the many things that frustrate us: a bad habit, an intention that always finds the back burner, some attempt to get others around us to change, maybe even a personal addiction.
The disciples-to-be were fishing all night with nothing to show. Jesus tells them, and all of his disciples, to cast our nets to “the other side.” That’s the side where we depend upon God’s free grace to do the catching for us. Truly, Jesus the carpenter really might not have known the tricks of fishing, but he certainly knew how to turn to grace. He tells us that we should turn to grace, too. The catch will be abundant.
Let us pray: Jesus, help me to find “the other side” in my own life. Help me to stop thinking I have the answers. Open my heart to your grace today.
