Foundations for strength

From today’s Scripture: “‘The one who listens and does not act is like a person who built a house on the ground without a foundation.’”—Lk 6:49

A couple, married many years, was walking along a mountain trail that they saw on a map along the highway, on a daylong drive. It made for a good break. The trail was circular; a walk along a river, then up a mountainside, and back down again to the path along the river.

When they had gotten all the way around the loop, to the river path, one spouse said to turn left; the other, who remembered the landmarks, said turn right. Alas, they followed the most insistent one, as spouse #2 patiently followed. After repeating the half the loop, spouse #1 saw a trail sign—for the second time!— and realized the mistake. They shared a laugh, turned around and soon were back in their car, refreshed for the journey home.

The mistake was a lack of foundation—spouse #1 didn’t note landmarks and didn’t listen. The strong foundation, though, was the couple’s patience and sense of humor. They lovingly continued along their journey together.

Let us pray: Dear Lord, help me today to tread lightly along the path you have prepared for me. Give me patience with those who I will meet; help me not to take myself too seriously!
