24th Wednesday in Ordinary Time

Judge not!

From today’s Scripture: “John the Baptist came neither eating food nor drinking wine, and you said, ‘He is possessed by a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking and you said, ‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is vindicated by all her children.’”—Lk 7:33-34

Walking the aisles of the grocery store you might be pulled in all directions. Here’s so-called healthy granola on the left and sugar coated cereal on the right. There’s produce toward the back of the store—right next to the rack of donuts and other sweets. There’s what we think are healthy choices at the deli; fighting for your attention against the delicious fried chicken next door! Which is right?

In one sense, maybe neither. We might not even be asking the right question. Yes, some food is better for us than others, but proving who’s right and who’s wrong probably isn’t wise. Even Jesus is frustrated by all of the judging: John was an ascetic, they said he was possessed, Jesus bemoans; Jesus does the opposite and is accused of laxity. Jesus, frustrated, offers a message for all of us: wisdom will sort it out. Stop judging others is solid Christian advice.

Let us pray: Loving Jesus, help me to see your face in all of the people who I meet today. Help me to withhold judgment. Strengthen me to see beauty everywhere and in everyone.
