28th Monday in Ordinary Time

Option for the Poor

From today’s Scripture: “He raises up the lowly from the dust; from the dunghill he lifts up the poor.”—Ps 113:7

There is a temptation for those of us who are not materially poor to spiritualize biblical references to the poor and poverty. That can be appropriate because spiritual poverty is a real concern in our culture.

However, the Church teaches that a basic moral test of any society is how its poor and vulnerable members are faring. Christians are called to put the needs of the poor and most vulnerable first. When we do that, we encounter Christ.

Let us pray: Lord, today, help me to give special attention to the needs of the poor and vulnerable, and find you there.
