Solidarity

From today’s Scripture: “All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. Sing joyfully to the Lord, all you lands.”—Ps 98:3-4

I think of solidarity as viewing the world from God’s global perspective. We all are brothers and sisters, children of our Creator. We don’t always act that way.

Yet every so often there are times of crisis when a disaster strikes across the country or across the world, and people extend themselves—even sacrificially—to strangers. At those moments our usual divisions and identities lessen in importance. That’s a sign: We humans seem to have solidarity hard-wired into us. But due to sin, we forget.

Let us pray: Lord, stir in my heart an awareness that all members of the human family are my brothers and sisters. Help me today to take on concrete step to acknowledge that to another.
