Letter of the law

From today’s Scripture: “‘Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking, ‘Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?’ But they kept silent….”—Lk 14:3-4
It’s always interesting how people respond when Jesus asks a question in the Bible. In the New Testament, Jesus asks over 300 questions. Earlier this week, he asked the blind man what he wanted, and the blind man responded instantly with “I want to see.”
In today’s Gospel, the scholars are left speechless when Jesus asked a question. They knew in their heart the answer, but they couldn’t see past the restrictions of the Sabbath. How often have I hid behind the letter of the law rather than embracing the spirit of the law? How often do I go to Mass on Sunday, not because it’s the right thing to do but what I must do?
Let us pray: Lord, help me today to go beyond the minimum required of me. Help me to embrace the spirit of your commandments.
