Table of misfits

From today’s Scripture: “…take the lowest place…”—Lk 14:10

I loved the table of those called misfits. When I was serving in one of Glenmary’s missions, I decided to visit the middle school once a week for lunch. Each time, the same group of eccentric kids were always at the table together.

I don’t intend to be disrespectful. But to others, these just did not seem to fit in. Some were slow in developing. Most of them had food on their clothing, dripped milk on their face, spit food out while talking, and were just all-around awkward.

But I loved being with these kids.

There was a joy to them that could not be missed. And, somehow, because I chose to eat with them rather than with the smart or popular kids, others came over to say hi. They seemed to notice these kids for the first time. The misfits began to be welcomed in.

In my own way, this small ministry was my attempt to be a living example, taking the lowest place, as Jesus describes in today’s Gospel.

Let us pray: Lord, give me the grace to associate with the lowly so that they, and I, might all be raised up together.
