Opening space in my heart

From today’s Scripture: “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” —Lk 18:13
I am moved by the prayer of the tax collector in today’s Gospel. In a few words, he notes his own sinfulness and begs God for mercy. Unlike the Pharisee in Jesus’ parable, the tax collector is not shy about owning his own weaknesses and begging God for help.
I know that it can be uncomfortable and even difficult to reflect upon our own sinfulness. I don’t like it, and I am sure others feel this way, too. But acknowledging our sins—honestly, truthfully, and clearly—is an almost guaranteed path to opening space in our heart, space for God’s mercy a for patience and understanding the weaknesses and sinfulness of others.
Let us pray: Please give me the courage, Lord, to acknowledge my own sinfulness so as to create space in my heart for your love, and for a deeper love for others.
