30th Wednesday in Ordinary Time

Comfort is a killer.

From today’s Scripture: “Depart from me…”—Lk 13:27

Ouch! Jesus’ words in the gospel today are tough to hear. Christ is very clear: Not everyone who thinks they are living the Christian life is actually doing so.

I don’t know about you, but, for me, these are tough words to hear. Of course, maybe they should be tough for us to hear.

One of the greatest killers of faith, from what the gospel seems to indicate, is comfortability. We become comfortable in life: nice house (any of us!), good job, kids, retirement, and so on, and before long we settle in and forget the demands of the Gospel. The narrow way becomes the comfortable way, and we no longer are living Jesus’ way.

Today, however, can be different. Today can be a moment to restart back down the narrow path.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, help me to wake up! Help me to be shaken, to reinvigorate my Christian walk with your son, Jesus, down the narrow path.
