Love God with everything you’ve got.

From today’s Scripture: “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength….You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.’“—Mk 12:30
Our Protestant brothers and sisters celebrate today as Reformation Day. Perhaps this is a day when we Roman Catholics should remember why there was a split in the Church at the time of then-Father Martin Luther. Were our 16th-century forebears focused on the two great commandments in today’s Gospel? Love God with everything you’ve got? Love your neighbor as yourself?
Can we get these two, basic commandments of our faith front and center in our lives today? We certainly know from the Council of Trent, that followed the Reformation, that our Church needed plenty of reform! How can we be true to Jesus today?
Let us pray: Loving God, help me to nurture a spirit of reform at home and in society. Show me your ways of justice and love. Help me to put those ways front and center in my actions today.
