Follow his example

From today’s Scripture: Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice.” –Mt 23:3

My daughter is eight months old, and she has already started to imitate a few of my actions, like shaking her head when I say “no.” As she continues to grow, I know this means I will need to be more careful about what I say and what I do. If I want her to say her prayers or eat dinner without looking at her phone when she gets older, I have to start doing these actions myself and set a good example for her.

Jesus is like a good parent. Unlike the Pharisees and scribes, he models the behavior he asks of us. Jesus found time to pray even while he was busy performing miracles. He ate with sinners and washed people’s feet. He forgave his enemies and followed the Father’s will to the very end. All that he asks us to do, Jesus did while he was on earth. We just have to follow his example.

Let us pray: Jesus, help me today to imitate your behavior. Show me the ways that I can follow in your example.
