Stay awake.

From today’s Scripture: “‘Stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”—Mk 25:13
“Another day,” we say, about many things that environmentalists have been warning us about the decades. We’ll use less, throw away less, eventually turn towards solar or some other renewable energy—lots of things we know we need to do, but not today. That is the mistake of the maidens in today’s Gospel, too. They aren’t called foolish for nothing. They burned up all the fuel in their lamps, putting off the inevitable. Then they ran out of oil. Then there was a tough consequence they could have and should have avoided. We should listen, if we have ears!
Let us pray: Jesus, help me to wake up today! In your strength, give me the resolve to make responsible choices. Help me to respect and care for all of your creation. Today.
