Lead and encourage.

From today’s Scripture: “Then Mattathias went through the city shouting, ‘Let everyone who is zealous for the law and who stands by the covenant follow after me!’ Thereupon he fled to the mountains with his sons, leaving behind in the city all their possessions.”–1 Mc 2:27-28
Here, in today’s Scripture, we encounter Mattathias, an example of a principled leader. He not only intends to maintain his commitment to the Jewish law and covenant, but encourages his family and fellow Jews to do the same. They all leave the city immediately and settle in the mountains.
They left the safety and security of their metropolitan community, even leaving all of their possessions behind. Perhaps this passage invites you to consider what type of leader you would be willing to follow or what you would be willing to give up at a moment’s notice to follow the Lord. If needed, would you be willing to lead and encourage others to do the same?
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, help us to cultivate the desire to follow your will at a moment’s notice, forsaking all things and all others for the sake of your Kingdom.
