34th Monday in Ordinary Time

Giving it all

From today’s Scripture: “Jesus said, ‘I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.’” —Luke 21:1-4

Do we give from our want or from our surplus? If you are like me, today’s Gospel will make you feel uncomfortable and challenge you to give more—not only money, but also time and talent! How often do I use the excuse, “Sorry, I am just too busy, maybe later!” And do I use my talent for the building up of the Body of Christ or for my own personal gain? Jesus reminds us that each day we should strive to “give from our whole livelihood.” It can be as simple as phoning someone or pausing and listening to someone you meet as you ask them, “How are you?”

Let us pray: Lord Jesus, you did not count equality with the Father a thing to be grasped, but emptied yourself, by taking the form of a servant. Give me grace and courage today, to offer my “whole livelihood” to those whom I encounter.
