Persevere.

From today’s Scripture: “Jesus said, ‘By your perseverance you will secure your lives.’” —Luke 21:19
Do you ever get discouraged at the lack of progress in your relationship with Jesus? A few years ago, I was on retreat at the Gethsemani Trappist monastery in Kentucky. After a session with my spiritual director, I went to Confession. I was feeling kind of down and discouraged and mentioned this in Confession because I seemed to be confessing the same sins each time I celebrated the sacrament. He looked at me with compassion and said, “the most important thing in your relationship with Jesus is perseverance….” What spiritual wisdom and insight! The key as Jesus mentions today is perseverance. When I fail I pick myself up, count always on the mercy and compassion of Jesus.
Let us pray: Lord Jesus, oftentimes on my pilgrimage on earth I can become discouraged as I follow you, living out your commandment to love you and my neighbor. In those times when I fall and fail, pick me up and bless me with the grace of perseverance. Help me to more deeply know that your mercy and love are sufficient in my life.
