Laying down my life

From today’s Scripture: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”—Jn 15:13

Back when I traveled in planes more often than I do now, I always appreciated the respect given to servicemen and servicewomen. They boarded the planes first, were given upgrades when they were available, and were often publicly thanked. This was understandable: Human beings admire those who are willing to lay down their life for another.

Though not all will be called to military service, Christ is very clear, that being a disciple requires laying down one’s life for others. Sacrificial love takes on a new meaning in Christ. It’s not military sacrifice. Nevertheless, both involve giving one’s life for others.

We only have one life to live. The greatest act of love, therefore, is to give that very life over for another.

Let us pray: Jesus, thank you for giving your life to save the world. Help me to be courageous to give my life as a love offering for others. Amen.
