8th Saturday Ordinary Time

Awesome!

From today’s Scripture: “The fear of the LORD is pure.”Ps 19:10

When we hear about “fear of the Lord,” we should think, awesomeness. Standing in awe before the Lord is pure. Perhaps we seldom get a sense of the awesomeness, the loving pureness of God. People talk of sunsets, of mountaintop views, of the vast expanses of nature at the ocean’s shore. There we get a glimpse of awesomeness.

Many in the United States are experiencing a firsthand look at the awesomeness of God on the emergence of the 17-year cicadas right about now. There are estimates that a trillion of these marvels are ascending from the earth for a few weeks early this summer. That’s a million million—far more than we can imagine. A million in a small area, times a million small areas. We may not think of them as “pure,” but in truth, they point to something far bigger than us, an awesome creator!

Let us pray:  Open my eyes, Lord. Help me to see your mighty hand in the awesome things around me, even the ones that hurt my ears!
