Give it up!
From today’s Scripture: “We have given everything up.”—Mk 10:28
Have you ever given up everything for anything? We don’t think of it in this way often, but many of us give up a lot, for the good of others. Wives and husbands give up every other path they might have chosen to fulfill the vows of marriage. Parents in healthy homes give up all manner of things to provide a structured, nurturing environment for their children. People in helping professions give of themselves for community service. Many well-to-do people donate to make things better for others.
There are all sorts of giving, and many degrees of giving, from a little to everything. Only a few of us, the martyrs, are called to truly give everything for our faith. But each of us is called to give generously in all corners of our lives.
Let us pray: Lord, instill in me a generous heart. Help me to see in the needs of others a path of faithfulness to you.
