9th Saturday in Ordinary Time

The widow’s mite

From today’s Scripture: “He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury.”—Mk 12:41

My mother used to say, “Jesus is watching.” In today’s Gospel, he watches how people interact with the treasury. The rich give much, but a poor widow puts in just a few coins. Jesus praises the widow who has given from her own needs, not surplus.

Jesus watches us too, seeing how we spend our money. Do we spend lavishly on luxury items and give surplus pennies to the poor? Or do we give from our own needs to support those who need food, shelter or other support? Do we support our parish and Catholic organizations? Each of us is called to give what we are able.

Let us pray: God, help me discern your will for the financial gifts you have bestowed upon me. Send your spirit to guide me in choosing how much and where to give. Grant me a spirit of charity all my life.
