Return to the Lord

From today’s Scripture: “Even now, says the LORD, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning.”—Jl 2:12
We know Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting, but why does the Scripture associate that with mourning and weeping? It is because of sin. When we realize how we have offended the Lord with our sins, we should mourn our actions. In today’s world no one wants to feel bad, but sometimes it’s OK to realize we’ve done wrong if it leads to turning back to the Lord.
God is merciful. He asks us time and again to return to him. The Lord wants a contrite heart. Today we are reminded to turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. Let us truly remember the times we have not done so as a way to motivate our repentance.
Let us pray: Lord, I am dust, but I am made in your image. Accept my repentance and welcome me back into your grace.
