Ash Wednesday

Uniting with God

From today’s Scripture: “’When you give alms….When you pray….When you fast….’”—Mt 6:1

Today marks the beginning of our Lenten journey. It invites each of us to a conversion. St. Paul often uses the imagery of a race and so for our lenten race—a marathon if you will—the finish line is Easter Sunday. How will I train so that I might prepare for Easter?

Today’s gospel enumerates three training methods. You might even call them the Lenten cross training regimen for Catholics: Almsgiving—to share our “wealth” with those in need (e.g. the Good Samaritan); Prayer—to unite ourselves more closely with our Father (Lk. 4); Fasting—to open our eyes to our own vulnerability so that we may see the physical and spiritual vulnerability in others.

Incorporating all three will assure us of a more grace-filled Easter!

Let us pray: Father, send your Spirit upon me/us during this Lenten season that it may be a time of grace and produce much fruit so that I, as your faithful disciple, might witness more fully to your kingdom and deepen my love for you.
