Something new

From today’s Scripture: If you consider that God is righteous, you also know that everyone who acts in righteousness is begotten by him. See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. Yet so we are.—1 Jn 2:29-3:1a
What does it mean to act righteously? Does this command fill us with fear? With feelings that we are not measuring up? Jesus calls us to be holy like his Father is holy. As children of God we see that God has bestowed his love upon us. By this love we are something new.
It sounds too good to be true, perhaps even something only the overly optimistic believe, yet so we are. In this way, to act righteously is to take seriously the love of God. It is to be who we are in Christ.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, creator and redeemer, give me eyes to see who I truly am in your love. Through your Holy Spirit strengthen me today to act righteously.
