Joy worth waiting for

From today’s Scripture: “…what we shall be has not yet been revealed.” —1 Jn 3:2b
Now, please adjust this story for inflation. I heard that if you offered a 10 year old a nickel today OR a quarter next week, most children would take the nickel with its immediate benefit rather than a greater amount later on. After all, next week is such a long way off! So the question is: are we simply a larger version of that 10 year old?
It’s been said we “settle for so little”—namely the joys of this world, devaluing the promises of the next. The temptation is that shiny nickel right in front of us that I can have NOW. One barometer of maturity is the ability to postpone gratification. Spiritual maturity would seem to be able to identify those joys that are worth waiting—and working—for.
Let us pray: Lord, help me to trust that when your plan is revealed, we shall be like you, seeing you as you are.
