The 12th Day of Christmas

From today’s Scripture: “God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” 1 Jn 5: 11

Today is the famous 12th day of Christmas—the time when traditionally the Christmas season ends with the arrival of the Magi. Now that we celebrate the Epiphany on a Sunday to give it greater recognition, the 12th day has lost some of its luster. Of course, for many in our culture, Christmas ended on December 25, having begun on Thanksgiving.

Before we leave this season, it’s good to remind ourselves of what took place: namely the great act of love as Christ took on our condition so that ultimately we could possess something more valuable than any earthly treasure: eternal life with God. In truth, even 12 days aren’t enough to honor this gift.

Let us pray: Lord, help me to remember that you have so much in store for those who love you.
