Corpus Christi

A great gift

From today’s Scripture: “While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, and said, ‘Take it; this is my body.’”—Mk 14:22

As we celebrate the great feast of the Body and Blood of Jesus, I reflect on the great gift that all of us receive. We receive Jesus. I fear that sometimes we take this gift for granted.

Several years ago, when I was visiting family members in Lithuania, they shared the pain that the Communist government closed all the churches in the country. They endured many hardships during these 50 years, but the greatest pain was not to be able to receive the Body and Blood of Christ.

I never took the Eucharist for granted again.

Let us pray: Loving Lord Jesus, I give great thanks for how you nourish me by your Body and Blood. May I celebrate and live this gift.
