Eighth Monday in Ordinary Time

Joy and suffering

From today’s Scripture: “In this you rejoice, although now for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials…”—1 Pt 1:6

St. Peter today talks about joy. The joy comes from knowing of the glorious inheritance of heaven that Christians have because of Christ’s resurrection.

But St. Peter is a realist. Yes, heaven awaits those who persevere, but in the meantime, we’re living on earth. On earth, we sometimes suffer. We or our loved ones fall ill. We may struggle with finances or relationships. The promise of heaven is great, but why must we suffer first?

St. Peter tells us: Because if we are genuine in our faith, even our sufferings may glorify God.

Let us pray: God help me persevere in faith when I suffer. May my example witness your glory to others.
