Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Be like Jesus

From today’s Scripture: “No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher.”—Lk 6:40

Today’s Gospel includes the famous “remove the wooden beam from your own eye” advice from Jesus, but it was the line above it that caught my attention. We are disciples of Jesus and of course we can never equal him, but through prayer, the sacraments and living God’s will, we can become like him.

When we do something kind for the homeless person at an intersection, we are like Jesus. When we support good charities with our time or treasure, we are like Jesus. There are many opportunities in our lives to be like Jesus. Let’s choose to do so.

Let us pray: Lord, help me to follow you so that I may become like you.
