Following the signs

From today’s Scripture: “…behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.’” —Mt 2:1-2

Today’s gospel evokes a traditional Christmas card of the Magi arriving from the East. But there’s a lot more going on in the familiar story. We have the rich and powerful (Herod) becoming restless and rejecting the Lord. Rather than worship him, Herod seeks him to destroy him.

In complete contrast, we have the Gentiles from the East, trusting their faith and setting out on a long and difficult journey, following the signs provided to come and worship Jesus. And then, in what must have been amazing to the first-century Jewish readers, we have God speaking to the Gentiles in a dream and warning them to return to their country by a different route to avoid Herod. Through these actions, it becomes clear that Jesus not only comes for the Jews but also for everyone.

Let us pray: Lord, just as the Magi followed your sign in the star, help me recognize the signs that I am being called to follow and to share the gifts that you have given me.
